From 2nd generation: The pleasantness from living on the edge (with magazine September 2021 edition)

Q What do you think is the difference between 1st generation and 2nd generation?

Morita: In any case, the 2nd generation are really close. The day we passed the audition, we all went to dine in together.

Fujiyoshi: Ahh, we did go~ (laughs).

Morita: Since then, I couldn’t feel any distance at all. It’s comfortable and fun no matter who is talking to whom. But when it gets serious, I could say my opinions and everyone is so serious, which I think is cute.

Fujiyoshi: We are like students, or rather, male students. Seeing that made me laugh (laughs). There’s the feeling of naïve boys, and I love it.

Morita: I have always wanted to do what I love as a job. There were many twists and turns before arriving at Sakurazaka46. It’s hard to put it into words, though. But what I learned from being an idol is how I can’t do anything by myself. “I can do it because everyone is there!” become my fundamental.

Fujiyoshi: We are blessed, aren’t we? As for me, right after we became 2nd generation, my genmates told me, “Karin, you can do whatever you want”. My desire to be honest exploded, and I suddenly started to express my opinions. At that time, the group was something made by the seniors, and I felt that it’s a bit wrong for me to intrude, but… Everyone is so kind.

Morita: That’s why Karin-chan is so outspoken on her thoughts. In general, I agree with what she says.

Karin: I think that I’m an insistent person. But most of the time, Hikaru is the only one who agrees with me (laughs).

Q How do you want Sakurazaka46 to be from now on? Do you have an image of it?

Fujiyoshi: Personally, I want to grow the artistic side. At the moment, the only thing that achieves the artistic feeling I envisioned is just the CD jacket pictures.

Morita: Karin was always smiling when we were taking pictures for the CD jacket. For me it’s the songs. Since we became Sakurazaka46, we have only released two singles, but we have 14 original songs, and they all each have different directions, the more I explore it the more interesting it becomes (laughs). Because the melody and theme of the lyrics is different for each song. Rather than deciding on a fixed image, I hope people can enjoy the fact that there are many various genres. In terms of performance, it’d be great if I could be a different self in all the songs.

Fujiyoshi: You’re the type with strong particularities, aren’t you?

Morita: Yes, once I talk about it there’s no end to it. In the beginning, sometimes I don’t understand the songs at all, and sometimes I feel confused as to how I should sing them, but I think that it’s a challenge-- or rather, a learning experience, and it’s fun to develop together with everyone.

Fujiyoshi: Wow, you’re a perfectionist.

Morita: Yeah, I’d hate it if it’s not perfect. But I don’t really want to tell people around, like “I want to stick to this!” (laughs)

Fujiyoshi: Fans might know about it already (laughs).

Q Do the two of you like to do challenges and adventuring?

Morita: Yes. I think I’m quite a curious person. Even if it has failed once, I will challenge it again by trial and error.

Fujiyoshi: I have come to love this job ever since I started doing it. When I was in my hometown, I really didn’t do anything, to the point of being a recluse. But here, I enjoy giving things a try, and I come to quite like difficult things as well (laughs). There are times when it gets hard you feel like you just want to throw up during a shoot, right?

Morita: Yeah. We both want to live on the edge (laughs).

Fujiyoshi: Yes (laughs). Feeling like throwing up, but it’s fun. This world is muddy in a good way. The people who look so glittering on the outside are constantly getting injured, sweating and practicing and feeling down. I think it’s cool to see how human they are. I feel that Sakurazaka46 is unconventional as an idol, so perhaps that is why these people are selected as 2nd generation.

Morita: We are asserting our opinions clearly, but we don’t run away from them. I like that part too. That is why I strongly feel, “I want to live for the group”.
